Secure—in our God-given identity—we fly. “Until I knew who I was, I was always trying to prove who I was. Once I knew, I stopped trying to prove it to others, or to myself. I just lived out of who I was.”
This is a testimony of a mature believer who understands his/her identity in Christ. One of the first steps on the pathway of maturity is discovering the joy of our identity in Christ.
Until we are secure in our identity (in who God says we are) we will be putting all our energies, all our time, all our resources in trying to prove ourselves to others or to our own selves. Conversely, being secure in who God says we are will release in us all the wonders and beauty that God has deposited in us. Trying to prove ourselves shows that we don’t really believe who we are; for if we believed what God says about us, we would use that as a foundation in our lives and live in a peaceful, confident way.

And what does God say about us? Who does He say we are? It’s very difficult (if not impossible) to hear what God says about us until we expose and deal with the lies that we’ve already believed about ourselves; lies that the enemy has told us, lies that others have told us, lies that we tell ourselves.
Here’s a guiding question: What does it mean to you when you hear the voice of your Heavenly Father to your heart saying, “My Image Bearer, My Beloved Son/Daughter,” or when you hear the voice of Jesus to your heart saying “My Faithful Steward, My Trusted Friend, My (future) Co-Ruler”? Do you hear Him call you this? If His voice doesn’t thrill you, chances are you have believed a lie about yourself.
As changes happen around us and within us, we can be secure in that which does not change—which is God, His Word, and who we are in Him. Once we discover who we are in Him, we’ll be ready to mount up with wings as eagles. God says we will fly! (Is. 40:30,31). |
