Whether you are looking to get involved in a “ministry” for your own spiritual growth or to serve others, we have a lot to choose from. Simply read what Pastor Michael says about “ministry” and DSC’s view on it and then read what the Apostle Paul wrote about in regards to God’s heart toward “ministry” and being a servant—then click on a ministry below for more information. If you want to do some “glorious custodial ministry” you will need to fill out a ministry application.
Pastor Michael says:
“Living our lives for our “Audience Of One” is what we live, encourage, and teach here at DSC. We are purposely “de-elevating” what most of the church “elevates” as “Real Ministry,” which is the work done in the Sunday service and the church work done in our gatherings (the ministry of the word, music, counseling, serving). We are not devaluing these things, but we are putting them in their proper place – in light of the IMPORTANT MINISTRY which is to Shine our lights TODAY – in light of THAT DAY.
We do this because there is tendency to elevate this “Church Ministry” above personal integrity and relational integrity (see articles at end). We have observed that the motivations for Church ministry may be pride, ego, or greed. These wrong motivations are so much harder to engaged with one who’s heart seeks integrity in relationships and in the walk with the Lord. This is why we emphasize personal and relational integrity over “church ministry.” Yet, since there is the need for this custodial work, and since we believe that God raise up people to do this glorious custodial work of the Kingdom, we as leaders must state a clear pathway to enter into those ministries – thus this communication.”
The Apostle Paul is our great example of this “custodial ministry” (A.K.A. “church work”). A servant is a lowly person in the eyes of man; one with no rights and given menial tasks to do. Paul says that He is a servant of the Church.
Col 1:24-25 Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness—
We want to follow in Paul’s steps as custodial servants, with the same intent as Paul had, which is: to present everyone perfect (mature) in Christ on That Day: If Paul’s “Church work” is the menial tasks, what then is the REAL TASK of the Church. It’s to SHINE HIS LIGHT TODAY – IN LIGHT OF THAT DAY. Paul lived and loved in light of THAT DAY:
Col 1:28-29 We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.
2 Cor 11:2-3 I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.
Phil 2:12-16 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed — not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence — continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.
Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life — in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing
2 Tim 4:6-8 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day — and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope — the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
Our goal is to, like Paul, live our lives as unto the Lord and not unto men, pointing people to live unto their “Audience Of One”: Gal 1:10
Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.
